Alliance Partners' Worldwide Activities

Global Activities
Image of fisherman in NicaraguaAt a global level, G-FISH maps where fishery reforms have been implemented and identifies management practices that have worked well. By identifying, synthesizing, and sharing examples of successful, and not-so-successful, fishery management practices in developing countries, G-FISH provides new insight into the field of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture. G-FISH also provides space for Alliance members to share ideas and collaborate in new ways.

FISH FOR FOOD SECURITY
For many impoverished countries, fish is the primary source of animal protein; however, as populations grow and demand for fish expands in the global market, many fish stocks are fished using irresponsible, unsustainable methods.

In light of the Congressional earmark focused on food security, G-FISH compiled fact sheets outlining the current state of fisheries in specific African countries to be used by USAID teams working to develop concept papers on food security. Please click below to view these fact sheets:

Local Initiatives
At local levels, G-FISH works through Alliance partners and local stakeholders to promote sustainable fisheries and aquaculture practices. The Spiny Lobster fishery in Honduras and Nicaragua is the initial target fishery; other fisheries will be added as the partnership grows. With a focus on catalyzing change in practices, the Alliance uses a system-wide management approach that stems from an assumption that change can not be generated externally, but must be demanded from the system itself. By engaging multiple players from multiple sectors (economic, environmental, governmental, and social) and at multiple levels (national, regional, community, and family), G-FISH facilitates collaborative action to create system-wide change. Common ground, including key issues and needs, is identified and agreed upon by participants within the fishery.

Building upon this common ground, G-FISH is able to identify where Alliance members' technical expertise and market leverage can be most useful in catalyzing change. In addition to providing specific technical assistance, G-FISH initiatives continue to facilitate the collaboration among the multiple players within the system to foster innovation and support sustainable solutions at all levels.
